My tranny fluid is a little black in my 2002 Ford Focus?? What can I do to help it?

-It looks a little black and smells odd...Does this mean it's dead or do I just need to add more or what??? Help..Its a 2002 Ford Focus SE Automatic.It would probably be best if you change it
